INFUSE SUSTAINABILITY INTO THE ROSE-HULMAN EDUCATION AND CULTURE

GOALS

Approach sustainability as an institution of Teacher-Scholars who are committed to sustainable development that meets “the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”1 Develop a comprehensive plan to reduce campus consumption of non-renewable resources; to reuse and reclaim resources and waste; to produce renewable energy on campus; and enhance learning and training opportunities and experiences in sustainability for students, faculty, and staff.

STRATEGIC ACTIONS

By December 2026, ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ will:

  • Perform a comprehensive baseline assessment of energy usage on campus, establish a Sustainability Committee, and identify and select an individual to direct sustainability initiatives.
  • Identify targets for reduction of energy use that will reduce overall Institute carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (CO2-eq) and energy consumption by at least 10% relative to Academic Year 2022-2023 levels.
  • Reuse/reclaim resources and waste by improving recycling programs on campus and creating landfill diversion targets.
  • Finalize a plan to produce energy on campus through cost-effective renewable energy systems that is equivalent to at least 20% of the Institute’s electrical energy consumption.
  • Increase the breadth and depth of curricular programs, co-curricular activities and training opportunities for faculty and staff related to sustainability, including utilizing the installation of renewable energy systems as an educational resource.
